In October 1944, concentrated penicillin was prepared in my laboratory. It was tested on the standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus and found highly potent. Three white rats, each weighing about 100 grammes, were inoculated intraperitoneally with 0.5 c.cm. of fresh rat leprosy material. A subcutaneous injection with 0.5 c.cm. of the material was also given in the groin at the same time. From the second day onward after inoculation with the leprosy material penicillin was given intraperitoneally, 400 units, twice a day for seven consecutive days and then once a week for eight to nine weeks more.
